Poem of the Week "November, Winter, Change, and Hope"

A weekend welcome to Gooseberry Garden!.The theme "November, Winter, Change, and Hope"had many wonderful poems in .The winter is in and we all cuddle safe at home decorating and ready to welcome the Christmas .To all my poetic friends,an advanced "Merry Chritmas".

This week poem 'A Winter's Tale' talks about the memories of the past winter and thoughts of our poet Rinky Rimes.

A Winter's Tale by Rinky Rimes

A WINTER'S TALE

The play was over.
All the giggling and terrible acting were done.
We were young village girls
Performing at a neighbouring village hall.
Was it two miles from home or more?
The distance escapes me.
Does it matter?
All that matters is the stars.
That and the frost.

Transport arrived to take us home.
Some would have to 'start walking'.
(In my memory we walked all the way.)
Does it matter?
All that matters is the stars.
That and the frost.

Five of us linked arms
And started walking homewards.
We didn't speak;
We had done with laughter
And bad acting.
Were there five of us?
Does it matter?
All that matters is the stars.
That and the frost.

The memory of that night
And that walk
Is with me still.

'A Winter's Tale'
Demands snow and a full moon.
We had no moon, no snow,
No Christmas-cardy
Effulgence of night-time glory.

We had a dark blue sky,
A billion stars,
And a road fast-crisping
In the icy stillness.

The air was bitter.
Our breath billowed out,
Temporarily clouding the stars.
Branches, whitening before our eyes,
Stood stiffly,
Surely ready to snap.

We walked in unison,
Briskly, because of the cold.
One could almost say we marched.

No words were spoken,
Yet such a sense of companionship
Pervaded that night
That I remember the silence
As a meaningful conversation.

We spread out
Right across the vehicle-free road.
(This was 1947 remember!)

What a poor old 'Winter's Tale'!

No lights,
No snow,
No 'Ho! Ho! Ho!'
No holly berries
Or 'Christmas Merries'
No decorations
Or fond relations.
No carol-singing
Or present-bringing.

Silence,
Except for the
Sound of flinty feet
On the fast-frosting road.

And the vision of periwinkle stars.

What's to be Thankful for...-by Teresa Marie

What’s to be thankful for you ask?
To make a list is quite a task:
I’m thankful for my life
to be my lover’s wife
I’m thankful for my husband
who is my best friend
I’m thankful for the children
God blessed me with back when
I’m thankful for my great joys
my grandchildren, the girl and boys
I’m thankful for my father and mother
for my sister and for each brother
I’m thankful for my adopted ones
all the daughters and the sons
I’m thankful for every friend
into my life God did send
I’m thankful for legs to walk
and a mouth with which to talk
I’m thankful for ears to hear
and heart that holds no fear
I’m thankful for eyes to see
all the blessings God’s given me
And this list could go on
unto the stars and beyond
But let it suffice to say
I thank God for every day!

Poem of the Week "Childhood, Dreams, Books, and Role Models"

A weekend welcome to Gooseberry Garden! The theme "Childhood, Dreams, Books, and Role Models" itself has lots of muse to write about.Children are a source if joy and childhood is a source sweet remembrance.Pretty little things by Jothi Mishra is one such poem that recalls sweet memories from childhood.I can't ignore the facts on these lines...so sweet. Thanks to all contributors and your wonderful poems.

Pretty little Things-by Jothi Mishra

Pretty little things
So many, you ignore.
Few, you can never forget.
For some, you are not sure.
Few, constantly pricks.
Many others, just useless tricks.
No matter how small they are.
They have this bundle of power.
Which can control you,
or can twist your mood.
Some, you wanna retain.
Others, you elude.

The tiny gift your friend gave.
For a sip of coffee, you crave.
First prize, you won in school.
Silly things you did, pretending to be cool.
Sarcastic comment, your classmate made.
Fun you had in college parade.
A friend, who stopped talking to you.
Next door pal, with whom you grew.
Mistakes, for which your mother slapped.
Ohh, the height of enjoyment you had
in designing pranks and getting trapped.
Flowers of the plant you planted before.
That girl in your class, always outscored.
Lovely, unusual sibling love you shared.
Shine of your new bike, you proudly glared.
Movies, outings and trips with your gang.
Irritating others with your private slangs.

These small things.
They do count.
Adds meaning n spice
in your lives n surrounds.
Pretty little things
they may be.
Made from people
like you and me.
An elegantly blended.
potpourris, of sweet n sour
moments n memories.

Poem Of The Week - Halloween Special

Welcome back to Gooseberry Garden! With fall now and winter around the corner, we got lots of celebrations and festivals and Halloween being one.Hope you had a eerie and fun Halloween. The poetry picnic had many amazing Halloween poems and the one below is another creepy one.A poem by Shail  Rahuvansi from Muse,Verse n you, she has written the poem as eerie as possible.I loved the way she ended the poem " Whose Halloween is it anyway?Mine or Theirs?" ..hehe..yes,sometimes we wonder how true these lines are at spooky nights :)

Whose Halloween Is It Anyway? -by Shail Raghuvansi

Many a night
when I try hard to sleep,

Howling dogs
prey on my hidden insecurities....
Hooting owls
send me eerie messages
of forthcoming misfortune....
Blind bats
rush past me
to feed on the blood of god forsaken creatures...

During the day
when I feel free as a lark
scary scarecrows in green fields
stare at me smugly....
Black cats
send shivers down my spine
as they circle around me and mew mockingly....

Day and Night -
I am caught in the tentacles of time.
Each trying to wickedly overtake the other,
playing a dangerous game
of fun and fear
drowning all my arrogant assumptions
of my supposedly dominating presence.

Making me wonder..
Whose Halloween is it anyway?
Mine or Theirs?

Poem of the week (10) - Longing and Loss

Happy Weekend Poetic Friends.I welcome you all to the Poem of the Week for this week's theme Life, Loss,  Loosing, and Failures.I read many wonderful poems from talented writers and one which had my attention more was Free withing these walls.Ah! The title has so much meaning and so I read the poem which was more deeper in meaning. For those who are wondering , I am talking about Roughwaterjohn poems :)

I think it was a personal poem for Sara and since he had his linked his poem here for poetry potluck to select ,now this is here.

The poetry was overall touching and poignant and deserved to be here today

Free within these walls....

Free to fly, though kept within, the walls of those who cling,
Spirit swells, as heart burns bright, her thoughts as bird will sing.
Gaze from glass of ‘prisoned walls, she thinks and plans her day,
Words that wound she will not say, though here she may not stay.
Though loves her spirit free and bright, yet he clings too tight,
With clutch of need and grasp of doubt, still she will not fight.
For bright the light that burns within, this aged soul in youth,
Wisdom deep and heart most kind, helps deal with those uncouth.
She shares with those who share her light, but never undermines,
This need he has though clinging tight, she reads her loves dark signs.
Dark with doubt but not with pain, he fears his thoughts, not hers,
Wiser than the one who clings, her words and thoughts assures.
She views the world through curtained life, looks out on friends afar,
Though sky seems dark with lack of light, she finds a distant star.
Its light reflects the light within, she knows she need not stay,
She plays her part, still loves the one, who’s deeds have writ this play.
